Old Man of Storr, Isle of Skye
There is something incredibly intimidating when you stand alone in the dark among the weirdly shaped rock pinnacles. All other walkers are long gone and it is just me there, staring into the sky, hoping the clouds will clear and I will eventually see the starry night promised in the yesterday’s forecast. The out-of-this-world pinnacle giants seem like they are about to punish me for my insolence, for disturbing their peace at this inappropriate hour, for overstaying their welcome. Silly to think so but I could swear the supernatural is in the air. It has been 10 hours and I still don’t think I’ve got the shot I came for. Two bars of chocolate, a bag of pistachios, and a full flask of coffee later it finally happens! I have it! The most impressive glittering night sky in the most dramatic and eerie location. Now approaching midnight it is definitely time to make way back to the car which is about a mile downhill. The problem is I’m left with a useless torch that died hours earlier when I kept shining it into my bag of pistachios.
